Home Decoration and Kitchen Design: Worktops, Flooring and Accessories

Whatever type and style of kitchen you choose when planning your home decoration, make sure the details match the rest of your decor. For example, kitchen worktops can add enormously to the overall feel and style of this room. Two materials you can choose from are laminates and solid wood.

Laminates are a popular, practical choice. They are hardwearing, easy to clean and affordable. They usually come in two thicknesses and a range of smooth, textured, high gloss and matt finished, including square edged which can provide a more contemporary look and be shaped to accommodate curved units.

Solid wood adds character and warmth to your kitchen. Your worktop can be shaped for different edge profiles and grooves, natural wood needs a little care to maintain its appearance but it will be worth it for the sense of quality it creates. It will also match your kitchen doors and other units if timber has been your overall desired material for your kitchen.

As we mentioned before, small details can make a big difference and this is especially true with handles. When purchasing them look through the vast range of contemporary, traditional and timeless classic styles and think that the choice and positioning can really transform the look of your kitchen too.

It is usually best to avoid too many colors and finishes in your kitchen, so when it comes to flooring you may wish to choose a relatively neutral floor finish, or one which matches your worktop. It is also worth remembering that darker shades can be more practical if you have pets or young children, while lighter tones make the space feel larger.

While you are considering the color, consider also the choice of material. Solid wood has an authentic quality feel, and natural warmth. Laminates (in a range of finishes, including stone and wood effects) are hard wearing and less prone to scuffs and high-heel marks. They are also very hygienic and suitable for many allergy sufferers.
