Getting from the Gatwick airport to London

Mickey | travel | Thursday, January 6th, 2011

There are a number of options for getting from the Gatwick airport to London itself. The fastest solution is to take the one of the train services to Victoria station or to London Bridge and St Pancras International. Either one of the three lines will get the traveler from the airport to London city in 30 to 45 minutes. Trains run four times an hour, but only the Gatwick Express offers a non-stop service — to Victoria Station.

A low-cost, non-stop bus service runs from the south and north terminals to central London (Earl’s CourtWest Brompton) in 1 hour and 5 minutes. The easyBus runs every day and night except at Christmas, and departs every 15 minutes at peak times.

Alternately, National Express offers coach service from both terminals of the Gatwick airport to London as well as other cities. National Express also offers direct service to select hotels from the airport. Travel time is about 85 minutes.

The most convenient way, although not the cheapest, remains a taxi ride. Taxis are available at the airport terminals, and the cost depend on the traveler’s destination, but the convenience of being delivered right to the final address and to receive help with the luggage can be very well worth it.

And finally, car rental agencies such as Avis, Hertz, Europcar, National, Alamo, Enterprise, Dollar, and Thrifty, offer their services right at the airport, where the car can be conveniently returned.

All of these options can be explored online. Information is available from Gatwick airport’s own site and the various companies’ sites, where you can verify departure times and costs, reserve a seat, and buy a ticket. The same websites display contact information in case of flight delay. In addition, there is always Gatwick’s own information station which will assist the traveler with the final leg of his journey — from the airport to London.
