Some Garden Paving Slabs Advice

Mickey | Patio and Garden | Sunday, January 16th, 2011

If you have a garden, you probably want to add some paving material in and around the garden to help strengthen it, protect it, and make it look more beautiful. But what kind of material should you use, given all the materials at your disposal? One of the more popular types are garden paving slabs. These are cheap, easy to install, and come in a variety of colors and shapes that are suitable for nearly any paving slabs application in and around your garden. Here are some general ideas to stimulate your creativity – obviously, you will need to tailor them to your own garden design and plans:

(1) Let’s say there’s something you need to reach in the middle of your garden, such as a water spigot of some kind. Instead of having to walk through the dirt of your garden, use garden paving slabs as a ‘stepping stone’ walkway. Thus, you can not ruin your garden or get your feet dirty, especially when the ground is wet. These slabs are easy to install, not requiring any special preparation besides excavating some of the dirt to the depth you want.

(2) You can also use these slabs as a way to separate different sections of your garden. This can prevent people from walking in areas that they shouldn’t, while also helping you create different sections for your garden to keep your work organized.

(3) You can also create larger scale structures with paving slabs, though this will require you to do a better job of installing them by installing a proper sub-base and sand bed. However, if you do this, or hire a contractor to do it, you can create large scale installations like patios and waiting areas. One great idea is to install a small waiting area or patio within the garden itself. Then, anyone who comes over to look at your garden can experience it from the inside.

Decorate your House with Outdoor Accent Lighting

Mickey | Patio and Garden | Sunday, January 16th, 2011

The details of a structure can be enhanced by the right outdoor accent lighting. This is what establishments usually install to make their buildings stand out during night time. But this way of styling can be applied to your own home too. Accent lighting gives your place both beauty and safety right at the same time. Lights, if positioned at right angles and locations, can highlight the vital features of your garden, patio, or lawn. And with the adequate glow they produce, your outdoors can have that relaxing ambiance where you want to hang out and have a break. This technique in lighting is just what you need to recreate your outdoors from dull and scary to relaxing and lively.

Accentuating with lights is a popular trend used in many houses today. Why wouldn’t it be when it is very useful? Aside from giving your outdoors beauty and elegance, it also keeps the place safe. This simply means you can enjoy staying in your outdoors even during sundown without fear of simple accidents or crimes of burglary and theft. And since a lot of houses already make use of this style in lighting, you can simple ask advice from the owners or follow the way they decorated and put up their lights when you want to do your own outside lighting. You can make use of lighting fixtures like wall lights, deck and string lights, flood lights, spot lights, and pathway lights. It is a smart choice if you get those that use LED lights because they are low on energy consumption and are long-lasting. Lighting fixtures can be mounted on the branches of tress to create effects of moonlighting, silhouetting, and shadowing. Some can be concealed on railings or benches while others can be installed on the ground facing stationary structures to create a back light detail. It really depends on the designated purpose of the lighting fixture and of course your creativity.

Make your house stand out like what those popular establishments do, decorate and highlight your outdoors with outdoor accent lighting. You will certainly be pleased with the safety and beauty it will provide

Do You Need a Pop Up Gazebo? Yes You Do

Mickey | Patio and Garden | Friday, January 14th, 2011

If this summer ends up like last summer, you WILL need a gazebo to help you make the most of it. A pop up gazebo gives you shelter, just in case, and shade from the hot sun. They erect very quickly, usually about ten minutes.

Gazebos start at ten feet square (3m x 3m) and go up to 3m x 6m (10ft x 20ft). The bigger one is nearly as easy to put up and is worth the extra cost if your garden is big enough. It gives everyone somewhere to congregate and chat, just as they would in your kitchen if you had a party inside your house.

A large gazebo will give you space for a table, chairs and even a fridge to keep the beer and soft drinks cool. It means people can stay out of the sun and not be too obvious about it.

In these times of recession you may plan to augment your income by selling scones or vegetables at your local country market or farmers’ market. If the farmers’ market is outside you will need a pop up gazebo to keep the sun and the rain off whatever you are selling.

Garden centres and DIY stores sell pop up gazebos, mostly in Spring. Even Aldi and Lidl have them among their weekly special offers. At the end of summer is the best time to pick up a gazebo for less, when shops reduce them to clear the shelves for Christmas stock.

Assembling a gazebo is child’s play. Certainly much easier than trying to puzzle out a frame tent. If there are two people they can have a pop up gazebo unpacked and assembled in ten minutes, less with practice.

All the poles can only fit together in one way and they are colour-coded too make it even easier.

Greenhouse Gardening For Fun And Profit.

Mickey | Patio and Garden | Thursday, December 30th, 2010

People grow plants to have their own source of organic food and to grow beautiful plants to decorate their home, yard, and business. A lot of indoor greenhouse gardening is done to grow plants in the field of horticulture and agriculture. People often want to grow plants no matter the weather, so they need a controlled environment like a greenhouse to protect their plants from the mean weather. Glass and plastic work best because it protects while letting in needed light, it also helps the LED grow lights to reflect back into the greenhouse to maximize their light. Just nice walls do not keep plants going all year long and heaters, cooling pads, and fans make an environment that is ideal for growing fresh vegetables without interruptions. Miniature fruit trees and hanging strawberry plants can be used to make a person their own tropical paradise.

It can also be profitable to grow plants. A person who loves to garden may wish to start his or her plant business. Ideally, these people have a lot of hard working kids in the family or they are able to hire outside help. A big business with plants, is a lot of work. A small business may easily be run by a retired couple. If they live beside a busy highway they can often just put a sign in front of their house to sell their garden goods. One can also advertise in the local papers, and take advantage of free Internet advertising like Craig’s list and Kijiji.

Raising plants can be a profitable business. Although, most people just like to raise their own food for their own pleasure, and rarely make a little money. If nothing else, people can save money on having to buy food and the food people grow themselves is usually much fresher, and healthier. One may wish to do some research online or by reading books to learn the best ways to garden. A lot of bad guys are out to attack plants, like fungus, diseases and various insects. However, some insects, like lady bugs and lace wings, which look like winged aphids, are actually the good guys. Also, one should learn to love spiders, as ridiculously few are dangerous, and they can save your garden and even your life, by killing disease carrying mosquitoes.

Gas Fire Pit Beauty

Mickey | Patio and Garden | Wednesday, December 29th, 2010

Every good host should understand the needs of their guests, especially in potentially uncomfortable environments such as the outdoors. Even in the relative peace and comfort of a backyard or garden, one must take care to serve the guests’ needs. Food, drink and entertainment are relatively easy to handle, but what about temperature? There are ways to control the temperatures of our backyards, using the power of a fire pit. Gas fire pits may look like a prissy and weak functioning tool on the outside, but their interiors pack lots of power. They are meant to be decorative as a way to blend a functional heater with the decor surrounding a yard. They are most definitely not an eyesore in the daylight, as their decorative touch has a lot to give.

How is this decorative look achieved? Using an array of natural and synthetic materials, fire pits are made to look fancy. Let’s start with the fire reservoir, for example. The reservoir is a simple metal bowl which is made to contain fires and stop it from spreading. The impenetrable wall of metal prevents any fire from travelling to a different location. This is important in making fire pits safe to use. You would think that a functional piece like this would be lacking in color and depth. However, the fire reservoirs are colored and shaped into a beautiful design. It’s okay to put plants near the pit, so long as they are hearty, such as the bridal wreath spirea.

Pieces of mosaic ceramics are frequently used to coat flat surfaces on the outside of a gas fire pit.  Special mortar keeps the pieces in place. One of the most common places that mosaics are placed is on the rim. The fire pit rim provides a table space for objects to be placed. Always keep gas containers or fire starters off of this area. Spend some time looking for the perfect design, as it just might pay off.

Mickey | Patio and Garden | Friday, December 24th, 2010

During autumn when the leaves begins to fall and starts accumulating on your lawn, a lawn sweeper is something that you need to help you get rid of the leaves. If the fallen leaves are left undisturbed, they can suffocate lawn and kill areas of lawn grass. Keep you lawn in pristine condition with a lawn sweeper. Like the vacuum cleaner, it also has a rotating brush that sweeps debris and leaves and directs them to the collection container at the rear side of the sweeper. It is different and much better than a leaf blower because you do not have to bend down and manually pick the gathered fallen leaves. A simple lawn sweeper will help you save time required to pick up leaves, cleans your yard as efficient and as fast as a lawn mower.

Lawn sweeper is also called a leaf sweeper. It can either be electric or petrol powered, mechanically hand powered, and hitched or towed to a utility vehicle. Although it is called a lawn sweeper, its use is not only restricted for the lawn area because it can be used on hard surfaces as well like patios, hard concrete surfaces, decking, tarmac driveways, and other outdoor surfaces.

Regardless of the type of lawn sweeper you choose, the advantages are many. It is a great time-saver equipment because it can remove leaves as quickly as possible and does the job easily. It also saves you from having back pains. Give yourself a break and purchase your own lawn sweeper that will not only save yourself from trouble but will also leave your outdoor area clean and in good condition. To determine what size of lawn sweeper you should buy, consider the size of your lawn area, the amount of leaves that fall on your lawn, and the storage space for this device. Look for a lawn sweeper that has a shredding facility if you want to create leaf mulch out of the collected leaves.

HPS Grow Light – A Right-Hand Tool For The Indoor Gardener

Mickey | Patio and Garden | Sunday, November 21st, 2010

HPS Grow Light

Every gardener knows how much important sunlight is for a plant to attain its natural growth. When it comes to indoor gardening, one has to make sure that the plants get sufficient light for its growth. This is where HPS grow lights comes into picture.

A discussion on this product will definitely be incomplete without mentioning what a grow light is. This may be defined as a lamp that runs on electricity which has been specifically designed for the progress of the plant. It helps an indoor gardener to create similar conditions like that of an outdoor atmosphere and stimulate the growth of flowers and vegetation. Examples of the different types of grow lights out there include LED grow lights, CFL grow lights, HPS grow lights, MH grow lights and incadescent grow lights.

This product has become popular among professional indoor gardeners because of its energy efficiency and long life. Generally, it is used during the reproductive stage of a plant.

General features:

The product lasts longer than its other counterparts. It has the capacity to last for at least two years if used with proper care and caution. It is energy efficient too since it produces six times amount of light using the same energy as that of an ordinary condescend grow light.

A unique structure of its own:

Unlike other grow lights, this one uses sodium gas to produce a red color-spectrum light which boosts the flowering of the plant.

A small note of precaution:

Remember, if it is used during the first stage of a plant’s growth, it may have a long, leggy growth. If you prefer to use a HPS grow light during the whole phase of vegetation, it is always desirable to opt for a combination of metal halide grow lights and an HPS grow lights. Do not forget to use a ballast to control the power supply. The ballast will make sure that the light gets power to work smoothly and make sure that the power does not become excessive so as to explode. While using it, make sure to maintain certain distance from the plants since the heat from the light may burn them. As an added precaution, you may use the product in conjunction with a special air-cooled bulb, this is especially true if you are using your HPS light inside of a mini indoor greenhouse.

However, if used with great precaution, this light is sure to be an added advantage and a means to nourish your indoor garden.
