A Countertop Dishwasher Vs. a Traditional Dishwasher

Mickey | Home Improvement | Tuesday, February 8th, 2011

For those of you considering purchases of appliances for your home, we take a look at some of the differences between a countertop dishwasher and a traditional model.
The first, most obvious difference, is size. The countertop model is basically a scaled-down version of the conventional one, approximately the size of a modern microwave.

This smaller size means that it can be used on the countertop rather than installed and placed on the floor. So if floorspace is an issue in your home you may be considering this advantage.

The countertop model really requires no installation. Whereas the traditional one needs a plumber to connect to the water supply, these ones can be connected to the faucet in a sink by virtually anybody. They are plugged in at the mains, and so they require no specialist ability at all to start using.

Once the traditional ones are installed they tend to sit there for years. The countertop ones are designed to be disconnected and stored away, if need be. They don’t take up space either on the floor or on the worktops, providing you have cabinet space.

The next difference is the amount of water, detergent and electricity they use, A traditional model will use far more of each of these resources and so it is more expensive to run on a daily basis. Of course the larger, floor-based ones also cost more initially to buy, but it’s important to consider the cost of running our appliances as the price of electricity gradually rises.

The countertop dishwashers are more likely to be used by a person living alone in an apartment or a couple without children. It’s important to remember that hey will not provide enough capacity to do all the dish washing of larger families. Consider your own situation well before committing,

A Brief On Bathroom Taps

Mickey | Home Improvement | Tuesday, February 8th, 2011

One among the common bathroom fittings are bathroom taps, these taps find place in both the simple as well as luxurious bathrooms. Some taps are very basic and others are more elegant which enhance the look of the bathroom.  As the bathroom is also considered to be luxurious instead of only being functional, these taps are certainly in demand. As these taps are available in various colors and sizes, it is very important to choose the right one depending on the interior décor of the bathroom.

These bathroom taps are made from different materials and some of them are polished chrome, brass, steel, nickel, ceramic, porcelain and a lot more. Among these the most commonly used taps are the ones made of brass and steel. These taps have a splendid design and they are worth the buy. However, the major disadvantage of the brass bathroom taps is that they will undergo dezincification subjected to certain pH range. To make sure that this does not happen, one should only buy the high quality brass taps.

Steel taps are definitely a better option than the metallic or the iron taps. This is because these steel taps have no corrosion or rust problem. These taps provide a very neat look to the décor of the bathroom. There are numerous tap varieties that are available in the market these days. Some of the very commonly used types are bath mixer taps, bib taps, basin taps, monobloc taps, pillar taps, single lever taps and sink taps.

These taps can either be branded or unbranded. There are few differences between the two out of which one is the price. These days, some of the manufacturers tend to copy the designs of the designers, thereby providing the unbranded versions of the bathroom basin taps. There are a large number of factors on which the cost depends on and they are the material used, the style and the design of the tap. The most expensive taps are the ones made of stainless steel. These taps can be purchased either online or from the stores available through the country. Whatever the price of the tap may be, purchasing it to improve the look of the bathroom is desirable. You can also improve the environment of your bathroom by installing bathroom extractor fans uk.

Performance Shower Systems

Mickey | Home Improvement | Monday, February 7th, 2011

When planning to create a performance shower, you need to take a number of things into consideration. The first thing to consider what can home, hot water heater and water source be able to support. If you have multiple sources of water in your home, then lots of gallons of water will be used per minute. Most of the homes use shower valve types that turn on the flow of water at a single constant temperature. So, if you turn the handle, you will be able to control only the temperature and not the volume of water. This valve is known as pressure balancing valve.

If you want to control different water sources with a performance shower system, you need to use a volume and thermostatic control system. A thermostatic valve controls the water temperature. But, you cannot control the flow of water with this valve. Every component in the shower uses volume controls. They are generally placed close to the system that they control. For instance, a hand shower at the far end of the shower has the volume control exactly attached to it. These controls turn off and on water for each and every source. They can even turn the stream softer or harder. And, every hand shower, shower head and toe tester will have its own volume control.

The next thing you need to consider is the place where every component of the shower is to be fitted. The ideal design ensures that the user gets water turned towards him/her at all angles. The use of body sprays is to hit the user at the middle, shoulders and lower pack portion. Prior to installing the shower, ensure taking precise measurements. These showers come in all kinds of finishes and styles. Ensure to lay a properly designed and durable shower pan so that water does not collect in the shower floor.

Two Ways to Save Money on Home Utility Bills

Mickey | Home Improvement | Monday, January 31st, 2011

One of the things on people’s minds these days is the rising cost of utility bills.  With prices rising everywhere, it has become increasingly important to save money wherever you can.  One good way to save is to reduce those utility costs.  Installing home window tinting and DIY solar panels on your home are two of the best ways to do that.

Installing window tinting on all of the windows in your home can drastically reduce the amount of heat entering your home in the hot summer months.  A 50% light pass-through window film will block half of the heat coming in, and 99% of the UV rays.  The UV block is an added benefit to a homeowner, since it will keep your furnishings, carpets, flooring and artwork from damage from the sun.  There are also low-emissivity films that keep heat from escaping through windows for those who live in cold climates.  Window tinting is easy to install yourself, so you won’t even need to pay for an expensive contractor to do it for you.

DIY solar panels are another thing you can do to make your home more energy efficient.  A homeowner who is handy with a few common tools can put together solar panels and use them to help power their home’s heating and cooling system as well as appliances and swimming pools.  There are many websites online that outline specific instructions for constructing solar panels and installing them on your home.  A quick search will get you tons of how-to’s and lists of materials needed to design and build solar panels.

Just a couple of changes, like installing DIY solar panels and home window tinting can make a huge difference in your utility bills.  With the prices of everything going up and up, it is more important than ever to save money when you can.

So they turn to alternatives. And twig lights provide a perfect solution in these tough times. Manufacturers have introduced lights that work using batteries.

Twig lights come along with the step down power source and now they also come with the power source that operates on batteries. With this lighting solution, you need not worry when you are arranging a party, because your lights won’t be turning off. All that needs to be arranged is a secondary source for the music equipment. The price has been increased but it is still affordable. When one purchases these lights today the first set of batteries are thrown in the package, free of charge. Therefore, when you purchase this product you would be in for a treat. It is always good to have a contingency plan, in case something as disastrous as a power outage were to occur.

But it would go for another 6 hours. With such a product at hand, one doesn’t need to arrange for torches and batteries. Why waste money on alternative products when one can get their hands on this intelligent lighting solution. One should act smart and invest in products that would provide better value for the money spent.

Who Do You Buy Your Window Cleaning Supply From Locally?

Mickey | Home Improvement | Thursday, January 27th, 2011

Today window cleaning supply companies do not exist as they once did, and you can buy the same products that they sold at neighborhood retail discount outlets, and supermarkets. Even Lowe’s is selling floor buffers today, as that was something that you could only get from a distributor in the past. Doing your own windows is not tough, except when you have intricate and very delicate landscaping in your flower beds surrounding your home, then it could become a little disheartening, when things get trampled by your spouse or the kids when helping out with these chores. But the cost savings over having a service hired to come out to your home and do the same thing will run you a quite a bit of cash.

One way to save money on having your windows cleaned is the next time you have your carpets shampooed or steam cleaned, make sure they also provide window cleaning as part of their offers. By making it a part of the same job, the costs will be reduced, as these companies always enjoy the added revenue from extra services they can provide. If you have any water damage, you could also ask them to take care of this situation while they are attending to your carpets, and windows.

If you have been fighting your floor buffer more than actually using it properly, most carpet cleaning companies will sell services for waxing your hardwood floors, or smooth stone finishes such as marble. Just go online, and put in the word carpet cleaning with your city and state, or zip code, and you can see who will offer what types of all one in packages to take care of your entire home at a discounted price. Be sure and read the fine print, as they work off narrow profit margins, and will have limits on the amount of square footage they will treat for a sale price.

Solar Panels And How They Work

Mickey | Home Improvement | Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

A packaged interconnected assembly of photovoltaic cells, is called solar panel, and is used to produce and make available electricity in business and housing application. An individual solar panel can only produce a certain amount of power so to get a large enough production for commercial or residential you would need several panels. Solar energy is clean and renewable since the sun’s light is the source for the solar panels. Solar panels have become popular as a source of energy with the economy’s decline. As more people incorporate the panels into their homes and businesses, the cost of the panels is starting to decline, which will make them more affordable for people in lower income brackets.

Solar Panel Applications

Contractors who build homes to sell have found that installing solar power as a viable form of energy in the home increases the value significantly. When using solar power, batteries are charged to provide energy if weather inhibits the sun shining for a day or two. Solar Panels can save money because outside energy sources are not needed and solar energy is free. To install the panels in your home you will need a south facing unobstructed roof space. If you do not have that, there are other options like ground mounting system kits. When using the ground mount find an area that does not get shade at anytime during the day to prevent reducing the efficiency of your system. With rebates and incentives that have been offered it is possible to see a return on your investment in the first year.

Another thing they are being used for is when a standard power source is not available, for instance, in remote locations. People who enjoy getting away in an RV or travel trailer have found these to be good sources of energy in the areas that have not been developed yet.

Innovative Solar System Designs

As the energy conscious society moves forward with solar panels, architects and engineers keep this in mind when designing structures. Buildings and other structures have solar panels installed in a modern design that is eye-catching and professional looking. Roof designs are cleverly camouflaging the panels as they are being incorporated into the design yet maximizing their use.

With more manufacturers’ jumping into the world of solar panels the price has dropped over 40% since they first came on the market. Many choices are available to find the right size for your home or business. There are kits for the handy man who would like to build his own. When you purchase your solar panels you will enjoy the clean energy you will experience.

Advantages of Folding Steps

Mickey | Home Improvement | Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

It doesn’t matter how well laid out your home is, or how carefully you think through the furniture, there are always going to be hard to reach areas such as the top of cupboards, light fittings and of course the cobweb’s gathering corners of the ceiling. Being able to reach these areas quickly, easily and safely can make life so much easier, and this is where a set of folding steps comes in so handy.

Full sized ladders, while useful for many things, are not the most practical items when it comes to doing small jobs around the home. The last thing you want to try and do is wrestle a set of full sized ladders up the stairs to change a light bulb or dust the top of your wardrobe. Having a small set of folding steps means you can move them to wherever you need the around the home without having to strain yourself, or risk whacking chunks out of the doorframes as you try and maneuver them through. With small step ladders you can simply move them around and unfold them when you are ready to use them, and this is the best bit, step stools are self supporting, thanks to their clever v shaped design, so you don’t have to lean them up against the wall or other surface in order to use them. This also makes them very sturdy to use as they have 4 feet on the ground, so even if you don’t like using ladders, you will find using a step stool feels much safer. The other main advantages to folding step ladders is that they take up very little space when they are folded up and ready to put away, meaning you don’t have to loose a lot of storage space to them.

As you can see, there are a great many advantages to having a set of folding steps around the home, and whether you are going to use them on a regular bais or just every now and then, you will find that they are most definitely worth the small amount that you have to invest in them.

How To Install Fiberglass Shower Enclosures

Mickey | Home Improvement | Tuesday, January 25th, 2011

Installing a new fiberglass shower enclosure is not nearly as difficult as most home owners will make it out to be before they begin. To ensure you are headed down the right path, go over the steps that we have outlined for you below.

Step #1) Ensure The Tub Is Level With The Floor – The first step is going to be making sure that the enclosure you have placed into the bathroom is going to be level with the floor. If you are not level with the floor, you run the risk of having water flow out of the tub or enclosure, or even stress on the fiberglass itself.

Step #2) Mark The Areas Where Your Spout And Drain Will Be Installed – While you are dry fitting the tub and shower, you want to mark the areas where your spout and drain will be installed. This is much easier if you do it before you start cinching down the tub into place.

Step #3) Install Waterproof Drywall Behind The Tub – Pull the tub back out, and install waterproof drywall, or “Green Board” behind the tub. This will help you prevent the buildup of mold and mildew, should water get in behind the tub for some reason.

Step #4) Caulk The Seams Where They Meet The Walls – Once the green board is installed, you can replace the enclosure where you initially removed it from. Now you need to apply caulk to the seams where they meet the walls. This will help keep humidity from getting behind the tub and causing mold or mildew.

Step #5) Install Your Drain And Faucet Plumbing – After you’ve caulked the seams, you can begin placing your drain and faucet assembly into the enclosure. Take your time to ensure that you do not crack the fiberglass while you are working around it.
