Carpet Water Damage

If you suffer carpet water damage you are not only going to have to deal with the cleanup, but you’ll have to deal with the cost as well. You have to take action however as water damaged carpet can cause significant health problems on top of everything else.

Even if you are only dealing with a small amount of water, you could be facing a health hazard. It only takes a small amount of water to create a breeding ground for mold and bacteria. When water damage occurs from clean water, the risk is not as great as it is with dirty water, but it still needs to be cleaned up as soon as possible. First, be sure to remove any excess water and secondly allow the carpet to dry completely before bacteria have a chance to grow and flourish.

If, however, you are dealing with carpet water damage from a dirty source such as a sewer, you will have a real mess on your hands. If most of the carpet has suffered damage, it may be in your best interest to rip it out and start all over. It is also best if you let a professional do this as they will have the equipment to get the job done safely. In addition, it won’t be as easy as throwing the damaged carpet in the trash. Again, professionals will be needed to dispose of if properly. This all costs money.

If you are in an area that floods a lot or you’ve had one flood and just don’t want to deal with the repercussions again, you may want to choose a different type of floor covering. There are many different hard flooring options available so you won’t have to deal with destroyed carpets again. You can choose from such options as slate, marble or travertine flooring. Even concrete has become a recent hit in indoor spaces.

These floors are easy to maintain and not nearly as susceptible to damage from water. If you really want carpet, you can always put a small throw rug over the hard floor creating a cozier atmosphere that can easily be removed if water threatens. Choose your flooring according to your budget but also think about the type of flooring you would like and ask about what would work best in case of further problems with flooding.
